Atlee is a 1981 graduate of the East Tennessee State University. He attended Mt. Vernon High School in Fairfax County, VA where he was also a standout basketball player.
Atlee was the #1 draft pick for the Kansas City Royals in 1979. The Giants acquired Atlee from Kansas City in the Vida Blue deal just prior to the 1982 season and in 1983 the Giants left-hander put together a dominant season in which he led the National League with a 2.25 ERA.
He was the Major League Control Artist Champ with the fewest walks per innings pitched (1982, 1983), had the best major league strikeout to walk ratio (1983), allowed the least number of base runners per nine innings pitched in the Major Leagues (1983), was the National League Earned Average Champ (1983), and was the starting pitcher for the National League in the 1983 All Star Game.
A veteran of 2 N.L. Playoffs (1987, 1989), an A.L. Playoff (1981), a National League Championship and a World Series (1989), he played 8 seasons with the Giants before moving on in 1990. He pitched briefly for the Padres in 1990 and ‘91, and then after “Tommy John” surgery cost him all of the ‘92 and ‘93 seasons, Hammaker finished his career with the White Sox in 1994 and ‘95.
Atlee currently lives in the West Knoxville area with his wife Jenny, who he has been married to for more than 28 years, and their daughters, Erica, Jenna, Alesa, Christa, and Anna.
